New ways of making money : Axis Bank
I logged into my online account on Axis Bank today and this is what I found
They have come up with a new security initiative for doing bank to bank transfers and the user has to pay for it. They do not even give you the option of doing the transaction without using the enhanced security. If you don't use their new security mechanism then you cannot use the bank to bank transfer feature.
I am just amazed at how the banks find new and innovative ways to make money. Also the online transfer on Axis Bank is generally bad. They take ages to transfer money from one bank to another and also the user interface seems to be stuck in the 17th century.

Bing Vs Wave
Or otherwise Microsoft Vs Google. Its becoming an interesting battle between these two giants on the web front and this is my naive initial take after using/seeing demos of these web apps.
Bing. It starts off on the back foot with the name But Its Not Google. Its already comparing itself. Its not diffrentiating itself as something new and exciting which is going to change our lives. Why do we need another search engine that looks similar? Why do we need something to fix something that isn't broken? Although in the initial press release they claimed it can do a lot of things I have not been able to see any of it in action like finding the cheapest tickets and so on. Microsoft claims it to be a decision engine as against a search engine. How can it be a decision engine when I'm the one making all the decisions starting from what to search. For that matter wolfram alpha is a lot more exciting and addictive than Bing.
Wave. After watching the keynote video of Google Wave I could not help but say WOW its just great what this app can do on the web. Google manages to push the boundaries of what one can do with the browser whether it is with the maps, or mail, or photos, or the zillion other things that they do. Its about bringing great technology to the general public to make their lives easier and more exciting. But how is this going to make money for Google? How is it benefiting Google ? Will it make things more complex rather than easier ? Will it start to create more spam and thrash on the web? These are questions that will be answered in time. But for now it is an exciting Wave for developers. It is just so interesting how the boundaries of the internet are being pushed and I am excited to be part of the wave and you can be sure I will be on it as soon as it is released. If you want to ride the wave along with me register for an invite.
Microsoft just proved itself to be a copy cat once again. Google proved itself to be an innovator yet again. Microsoft always manages to copy and then become more popular by hook or by crook. They plan to pump in 100 million dollars into the advertising of this search engine (sorry decision engine). Is google just too smart for Microsoft ? Does Google innovate just too fast for Microsoft to keep up ? All I can say is that this competition is only making things better and more exciting and lets hope it goes on for a long long time.

Global Economic Slowdown and India
I have been asked this question by quite a few people "How is the situation in India and has the global economic slowdown effected our country?". It will be foolish to state that there has been no effect of the global economic slowdown on our country. Yes, it has effected us but has it effected us so greatly like it has in Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, to an extent China and so on. The answer is clearly no. And given below are my reasons as to why I think it has not effected us as much as it has effected them.
- We are not really opened up our economy as much as those countries have. We have been slow to do it and have done it in small baby steps that has made sure that very good regulatory mechanisms have been put in place. So although this has not resulted in great economic progress at the same time it has also not resulted in great economic decline. As they say faster the rise faster the fall - in our case since it was slower to rise so it is slower to fall.
- The Indian market itself is a very big market and people have ample money to spend. Indians like hoarding up money at home in the form of cash, jewellery, gold bars and what not - they dont invest their money as much in the stock market or in risky investments. Since we are risk averse we have not had as much money available in the system for investments and growth but this has also ensured that there is far less money in the system for investments that are made in a bubble. So most people have ensured that the money they have is safe. As long as people have money in their hands they will spend it.
- Black money will keep our economy going even if the money in the system will disappear. People will spend money as long as they have it. So even if there is no other money to make investments or to spend we can be assured that there will be black money that will do the job.
- It is election time and all the cash is coming out. Politicians will ensure there is money in the system as we watched on TV the other day people being handed over hundred rupee notes. All this money will enter this system very quickly. If it was me I would have taken that Rs. 100 and gone and bought something to eat and drink - the person who sold me the stuff would go and either put it in the bank or he will go buy more ingredients and then that person who sold it will do something with it thus bringing it back into the system.

The cauldron we live in
The attacks in Pakistan on the Sri Lankan team got me thinking about the cauldron that India lies in.
I hope the general elections that are coming up don't create a conflict that can escalate the matters further within our own country. The world economic crisis is not helping matters as it is a known paradigm that as peoples wealth depreciates conflict goes on the acendency. So its time for us to be guarded and careful.
- On the west we have Pakistan and Afghanistan - both literally ruled by the Taliban.
- On the South we have Sri Lanka which is fighting an intense bloddy battle with the LTTE.
- On the east we have Bangladesh which seems to be in anarchy.
- On the North we have Nepal that is struggling with Democracy and Tibet and China that can never resolve the issues between them.
I hope the general elections that are coming up don't create a conflict that can escalate the matters further within our own country. The world economic crisis is not helping matters as it is a known paradigm that as peoples wealth depreciates conflict goes on the acendency. So its time for us to be guarded and careful.

Importance of a personal website
I was reading a very interesting post by Seth Godin which I am going to quote below
A friend advertised on Craigslist for a housekeeper.
Three interesting resumes came to the top. She googled each person's name.
The first search turned up a MySpace page. There was a picture of the applicant, drinking beer from a funnel. Under hobbies, the first entry was, "binge drinking."
The second search turned up a personal blog (a good one, actually). The most recent entry said something like, "I am applying for some menial jobs that are below me, and I'm annoyed by it. I'll certainly quit the minute I sell a few paintings."
And the third? There were only six matches, and the sixth was from the local police department, indicating that the applicant had been arrested for shoplifting two years earlier.
Three for three.
This vindicates my earlier article on why every one needs a personal website or blog. I hope this spurs on everyone who reads my blog to start having a blog of their own.
Google never forgets.

What is the Credit Crisis ?
All the jargon around the credit crisis has had my head spinning over the last 4 months or so and then I watched this video which explains in plain English and very nice graphics what the crisis really is. After watching this video you get to understand why the huge bailouts that the US Government is giving is just not working. I'll let the video do the rest of the talking.
